What You Need to Paint on Fabric and Clothes

What Kind of Paint Can I Use on Fabric ?

To paint on clothes, use a professional fabric paint for long-lasting results that resist washing and won’t fade with water.

Avoid cheap paints at all costs if you want vibrant and durable colors that stand the test of time.

SneakArts paints are used by professional artists : they work perfectly on clothes, shoes, or even leather bags.

Essential Materials for Painting on Fabric

In addition to paint, make sure you have your paintbrushes and a rigid support (cardboard or wood) to place inside your shirt, jacket, or tote bag.

This prevents the paint from bleeding through the fibers and makes application smoother.

Now’s the time to customize your jacket, jeans, or cap ! SneakArts paints work on all types of textiles and don’t need to be heat-fixed, they bond directly to the fibers.

Preparing the Fabric Before Painting

For clean, precise artwork: Trace your design with tracing paper or use stencils.

Apply a white base coat first to prevent bleeding and to make colors pop — especially on dark fabrics. Apply 3 to 4 thin coats until the white looks solid. Let each layer dry (1–2 min with a hair dryer / 15 min in open air).

Best Way to Apply Fabric Paint

Use the colors of your choice and apply 2–3 thin coats for an even finish.

Let each coat dry before applying the next one — you can speed up the process with a hair dryer.

Once you’re done, let the paint fully dry for 24 hours.

How to Make Fabric Paint Last on Clothes ?

Protecting Fabric Paint with a Sealant

SneakArts fabric paints are water-resistant and don’t require and iron to set. For even longer-lasting colors, we recommend applying a thin coat of matte or glossy varnish.

Use a clean brush with very little varnish to avoid marks, and apply two light coats only on the painted areas.

Tips to Wash Painted Clothes

To preserve your artwork: Wash your clothes on a delicate cycle (30°C / 85°F).

Turn garments inside out before washing.

Avoid high temperatures, which may slightly dull the colors over time.
