The right paint for textiles

To customize your denim jacket, start with a primer and paint specifically designed for denim. Choose a paint that is machine washable and keeps the fabric soft. This will ensure that the paint adheres well, resists water, and does not spill or smudge when in contact with water or friction.

Equip yourself with customisation tools

Before you begin painting your denim jacket, gather the following tools:

  • Brushes: Depending on your design, you may need multiple brushes or a single brush for stenciling.

  • Masking Tape: To protect areas you don’t want painted and secure stencils in place.

  • Palette: To mix and prepare your colors.

  • Rigid Base: A piece of cardboard or wood to stretch the fabric and provide a stable, even surface for painting.

Using a stencil

Before painting, stretch the denim fabric using clips and a rigid backing (e.g., cardboard or wood). This ensures a smooth, even surface.

Using a stencil stencil, secure it onto the fabric. Use a transfer film to position the stencil easily, then heat it lightly with a hairdryer to improve adhesion.

Applying primer

A primer helps avoid drips and makes painting easier. Apply one or two coats of primer, working from the outer edges of the stencil toward the center.

After each application, remove excess primer from your palette to avoid smudges. This step ensures optimal adhesion and a clean result.

Painting your denim jacket

You can now apply the paint to the denim jacket, once you've completed all the preparation steps. Use the colours of your choice and let your imagination run wild! This is usually the most satisfying stage, as you get to see your creation take shape.

Spreading the paint

  • For the best results, apply the paint in thin, even coats. Spread the paint evenly across the surface, adding as many layers as needed to achieve the desired look
  • Allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats: about 30 seconds with a hairdryer or 1 minute without heat.
  • Avoid overheating the stencil or paint to prevent warping or damage.

Removing the stencil

Once the paint has dried, carefully remove the masking tape and the stencil. Use a cutter if necessary to lift edges without damaging the design.

Let the paint set on the fabric for 1–2 hours, allowing it to dry naturally. And just like that, your custom denim jacket is complete!

Caring for your denim jacket

To keep your jacket looking vibrant:Wash it on a delicate cycle or by hand.

If desired, apply a protective varnish to seal the design:

  • Matte Finish: For a natural look.
  • Gloss Finish: For a shiny, plastic-like effect.

Adding a varnish is optional but can enhance the durability of your design.
