Do you want to paint a leather motorcycle jacket or vest? Find all our tips for successfully customizing your jacket and give your outfit a unique look.
How to paint a leather jacket?
To paint a leather jacket, you must follow several preparation steps before applying leather paint. Then protect your creation with a special varnish.
Cleaning your jacket
The first step is to thoroughly clean and degrease your jacket so that the paint adheres. To do this preparation, take a cotton pad with paint stripper and rub the entire area to be painted.
For optimum adhesion on areas that are regularly subject to bending, such as shoulders or arms, you can also sand with sandpaper.
Change the color of your jacket
Once your leather is ready, you can paint your jacket by applying several thin layers of paint, and respecting the drying times.
Allow 30 seconds to 1 minute with a hair dryer, staying 15 centimeters away so as not to heat the paint too much.
If you are painting over white, you will need 2-3 coats depending on the colour. If you are painting over a black leather jacket, then we recommend applying 2 more coats of white first, to really bring out your colours.
If you are an artist at heart, or you feel like spending more time painting your leather jacket, then you can create a true work of art.
To do this, equip yourself with a customization kit or a paint pack to mix the colors and create the designs or patterns you like.
And if you're not good at drawing, you can use a stencil to easily personalize your jacket.
Once you have finished painting your jacket, you just need to add a protective varnish to make the paint last longer.
How to repair a leather jacket?
Repairing the grain of the leather
Is your jacket damaged and the leather is no longer smooth, or do you have deep scratches? Then the first step is to restore the grain of the leather.
To do this, take some sandpaper and sand the leather to smooth the surface and remove the damaged parts.
If the tear is deep, apply leather paste to have a uniform surface.
Recoloring your leather jacket
If the color of your jacket has lost its intensity or you want to hide small marks, then you can use a renovation kit with black paint to find a leather like new.
When you color your jacket, you must also prepare the area on which you will apply the paint and finally varnish to fix the color.
