Drawing on shoes

Categories : Custom Shoes , Tips

Creating a custom design on your shoes or clothing can be a fun and creative way to express yourself. This article will explore two techniques for transferring and painting shoe designs. Follow these steps to create and apply your unique designs easily.

Reproduce a design on your shoes

Trace the contours of the shoe

To ensure the design fits perfectly on your shoes, start by outlining the desired area.

 Here’s how:

Masking the Area:

  • Cover the area where you want the design with masking tape.

  • Use a 2HB pencil to trace the outline of the design onto the tape.

    Preparing the Layer:

    • Place tracing paper over the masking tape.
    • Use a pencil to trace the contours onto the front side of the tracing paper.
    • Flip the tracing paper over and trace the outlines again on the back side. This ensures the design is properly mirrored for transfer onto the shoe.
    • Erase any unnecessary pencil marks on the front side of the tracing paper.

Recovering your design

If you’re using a digital design or pre-drawn artwork, here’s how to transfer it effectively:

Find Your Design:

    • Choose the design you want to place on your shoes.
    • Open it in a digital application like Procreate or a similar tool on a tablet.

      Prepare the Layer:

    • Place your tracing paper layer over the design and adjust its position using the app’s zoom and rotate features.

      • Secure the layer with tape to ensure it stays in place.

        Trace the Design:

        • Take a screenshot of the design in Procreate.
        • Open the screenshot in a lightbox tracing app for better visibility.
        • Carefully trace the outline of the design onto the layer with your pencil.

Transfer the design on your shoes

With your design ready on the tracing paper, follow these steps to transfer it onto the shoes:

    Apply Masking Tape:

Cover the design on the tracing paper with masking tape (use multiple strips if needed to cover the entire area).

    Press the Tape:

      • Use a card to press the tape onto the design, ensuring the pencil marks transfer to the tape.
      • Transfer to the Shoes:
        • Peel the tape off the tracing paper and carefully place it on the shoe in the desired position.
        • Press the tape onto the shoe with a card to transfer the pencil outline.
        • Remove the tape to reveal the design transferred onto the shoes.

Paint your design on your shoes

You can now paint your design, first outlining it and then applying the colours of your choice.

      Painting contours

To create your contours, use a precision brush and the black leather paint for optimum resistance. Then apply the different colours in two or three coats, once the black paint is completely dry.
