Dye Clothes

Want to dye your clothes to give them a new color or a second life ? Dyeing is the perfect way to revive faded colors, hide stains, or simply customize your favorite clothes. Follow our guide to dye clothes using the right products and techniques for long-lasting results.

What You Should Know Before Dyeing Clothes

Which clothes can be dyed ?

You can dye most types of clothing — jeans, T-shirts, shirts, hoodies, or caps. Avoid waterproof or coated fabrics that don’t absorb color properly. Just make sure the item is clean, washed, and that you’re using fabric dyes designed for this purpose. This ensures an even and durable result.

How to know if your clothes can be dyed ?

To find out whether your clothes can be dyed, check the fabric label. If they’re made from natural or semi-natural fibers like cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or wool, the dye will work well.

Synthetic or waterproof materials, however, might not absorb the dye evenly.

Which Dye Should You Use to Dye Clothes ?

There are two main types of fabric dyes: liquid and powder. We recommend using a liquid dye or SneakArts paint diluted with water, especially for clothes that have patterns, embroidery, or logos.

If you only want to refresh the color of a single-color item, you can also use powder dye in the washing machine.

How to Dye Clothes

1. Prepare the Dye

Mix the paint with 80% water in a container to create your custom dye. You can use this technique to revive a faded cap, dye the shoe laces and much more.

You can even blend different shades to achieve your desired color.

2. Apply the Dye

Use a brush or sponge applicator to apply one or two coats evenly. You can also immerse the fabric completely in a bowl for about 5–10 minutes.

Let the item dry completely before wearing it.

How to Set The Color on Clothes ?

Fix dye using salt and vinegar

The traditional method is to add coarse salt and white vinegar to your dye mixture. This helps the pigment bond better with natural fibers.

Fix dye using a finisher

If you’ve dyed clothes or fabric that rub or sweat (like shoes, hoodies, or linings), rinse them with water and/or apply the SneakArts matte finisher diluted with 80% water.

Why You Should Dye Your Clothes ?

Refresh or personalize your clothes : Dyeing is a great way to revive dull colors or customize old clothes with new shades and effects like tie-dye.

Hide stains or discoloration : If your clothes have stubborn stains or faded areas, dyeing allows you to cover them and make your clothes look new again.
